The advent of X-ray free electron lasers

چکیده
Free Electron Lasers (FEL) use free electrons in the periodic permanent magnetic field of an undulator as a gain medium. They extend from far infrared to X-rays, they are easily tunable and provide high peak power. The advent intense (few mJ) short pulse (down attosecond regime) FELs with record multi GW power X-ray domain enables explore new scientific areas. These unprecedent sources come along versatile performance.

X-ray free-electron lasers
In a free-electron laser (FEL) the lasing medium is a high-energy beam of electrons flying with relativistic speed through a periodic magnetic field. The interaction between the synchrotron radiation that is produced and the electrons in the beam induces a periodic bunching of the electrons, greatly increasing the intensity of radiation produced at a particular wavelength. Depending only on a p...
متن کاملSp5-a the Challenge of X-ray Free-electron Lasers Structural Studies with X-ray Lasers
The history of the living world can be summarised as an elaboration of ever more perfect eyes within a Cosmos in which there is always something new to be seen (Teilhard du Chardin, 1955). Today, the bottleneck in the atomic resolution imaging of biological systems is a fundamental need for crystals. This limits the scope of detailed structural analysis to macromolecules and macromolecular asse...
متن کاملThe Path towards X-ray Free-electron Lasers
At present, the linac-based SASE process is the most promising approach to reaching x-ray wavelengths with a free-electron laser. In the Self-Amplified-SpontaneousEmission process the spontaneous radiation is amplified in the single pass of an electron beam through an undulator, and no mirrors are required. This is an essential requirement for x-ray FELs, since the reflectivity of mirrors decre...
متن کاملRelativistic x-ray free-electron lasers in the quantum regime.
We present a nonlinear theory for relativistic x-ray free-electron lasers in the quantum regime, using a collective Klein-Gordon (KG) equation (for relativistic electrons), which is coupled with the Maxwell-Poisson equations for the electromagnetic and electrostatic fields. In our model, an intense electromagnetic wave is used as a wiggler which interacts with a relativistic electron beam to pr...
متن کاملA simplified description of X-ray free-electron lasers
It is shown that an elementary semi-quantitative approach explains essential features of the X-ray free-electron laser mechanism, in particular those of the gain and saturation lengths. Using mathematical methods and derivations simpler than complete theories, this treatment reveals the basic physics that dominates the mechanism and makes it difficult to realise free-electron lasers for short w...
